DENVER – FEMA approved more than $1 million in Hazard Mitigation funding to plan a project aimed at controlling flooding and reducing its impacts along the St. Vrain Creek in the community of Longmont.

This grant will fund eligible costs and activities for Phase I of the Hover Road Reach portion of the Resilient St. Vrain Project to reduce impacts of flooding to residential and commercial buildings. Phase I entails the planning and engineering work for the Hover Road Reach segment of the project. Project planning activities include data collection, environmental studies, floodplain permitting and design construction plans. Completion of Phase I will prepare Longmont for Phase II, which includes the construction work.

FEMA is providing 70 percent of the project costs, a total of $1,008,150.50. Funding was provided through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). The city of Longmont is responsible for the remaining 30 percent of the project costs.

FEMA’s HMGP provides funding to state, local, tribal and territorial governments so they can develop hazard mitigation plans and rebuild in a way that reduces future disaster losses in their communities. The program’s initiative supports communities in reducing disaster losses and creating more resilience against disaster-related hazards.
