National Weather Summary

Midwest
Rain from the eastern Dakotas and western Minnesota southwestward to Kansas, where additional rainfall will total 1-2" or more in some locations.  Highs will be in the upper 80s to near 90 in places such as Chicago, Minneapolis and St. Louis.

South
Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon across the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. A few of these storms could turn severe, capable of producing small hail or strong wind gusts. An upper-level disturbance will form over the southern Plains, showers and thunderstorms developing across Oklahoma, eastern Texas, western Arkansas, and Louisiana, mainly during the afternoon.  Across Mississippi and eastern Arkansas, sunny skies should prevail.  The South will see highs in the 80s and 90s. Cooler 70s into the Carolinas.

Northeast
Sunshine across Pennsylvania, New York, and New England.  Showers and thunderstorms over Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.  Highs in Southern New England and the Central Appalachians will be in the 60s. The remainder of the Northeast can expect highs in the 70s.

West
The region will experience mostly sunny conditions. Highs will into the 100s -- and even 110s -- across southeastern California, southern and western Arizona, and southern Nevada.  The Great Basin, highs will be in the 80s and 90s.  Across the Northwest, as well as the northern and central Rockies, highs in the 60s and 70s.. (NWS, Media Sources)

Flash Flooding in the Central US, June 11 to 13, 2007

  • A stationary front from southwest Kansas to southeast North Dakota has caused significant flooding and flash flooding to parts of northeast Colorado, southwest Nebraska and central South Dakota. From 8.5 to 10 inches of rain have been reported at several locations in Phillips and Sedgwick counties Colorado. Rainfall amounts in several central Nebraska counties were between 1.5 and 4 inches.
  • As of 4 pm CDT Wednesday, June 13, no fatalities or injuries have been reported with this flooding.
  • Numerous roads have been destroyed or washed out in Philips and Sedgwick counties, Colorado Wednesday afternoon. Numerous basements were flooded over southeast Sedgwick County. Ten feet of water was reported over Highway 23 and a railroad was breached near Amherst (Phillips County) Colorado Wednesday afternoon.
  • Street flooding was occurring across much of the city of Imperial (Chase County) Nebraska (population 1,982). U.S. Highway 6 was closed from Imperial to the Colorado state line due to flooding Wednesday.
  • The fairgrounds at Grant (Perkins County) Nebraska was under 2 to 4 feet of water Wednesday. Highway 23 from Grant to west of Venango (Perkins County) Nebraska was closed due to as much as eight feet of water over the road Wednesday.
  • Some county roads in Sully and Dewey counties, South Dakota were flooded and washed out. Moderate flooding was reported late Wednesday afternoon in Manter (Stanton County) Kansas.
  • The Region VIII RRCC is activated at Level 3 to support the SST
  • There is no request for other Federal assistance at this time. (Region VIII)

Tropical Weather Outlook

Atlantic/Caribbean:
Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.

Eastern Pacific:
Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours

Western Pacific:

Earthquake Activity

On Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at 3:30 pm EST an earthquake measuring 6.8 struck about 115 miles south southwest of Guatemala City, Guatemala.  There were no reports of damage or injuries and there was no tsunami generated. Nebraska - Individual Assistance PDAs for two counties and Public Assistance for 19 counties are scheduled to begin the week of June 18, 2007. (FEMA HQ)

The National Preparedness Level remains at 2, while the Southern Area is at Level 3.
Nationally, there are two Type 1 and one Type 2 IMTs committed.

Predictive Services Discussion: Warmer and drier weather is on tap for Arizona, California and the Great Basin today. Interior Alaska will see scattered showers and thunderstorms today, mainly over the southern portions of the state.
